Editions and proofs

Every impression of an edition is its own work, with its own price and its own availability.

Unique works and editions

A unique work is one object. A numbered edition is a run of impressions, and each is a separately sellable object: an edition of twelve is twelve works, each of which can be sold, or taken off sale, on its own.

An edition’s size counts its numbered impressions only. Proofs pulled outside the numbered run are counted apart from it, so an edition of twelve with three artist’s proofs is fifteen impressions.

How impressions are named

A numbered impression is named by its number and the size of the run: 3/12. Proofs outside the run carry the trade’s own marks — AP for an artist’s proof, PP for a printer’s proof, HC for hors commerce, BAT for the bon à tirer — numbered where there is more than one: AP 2/3. They are separate objects from the numbered run, and usually priced differently.

A work’s page, and every answer an AI agent receives, use the name the seller’s listing gives each impression, exactly as given.

Buying one impression

An edition has one page. It lists each impression with its price and whether it is available, each with its own Buy. A link may name one impression, which the page then shows first.

Nothing is reserved until you approve the full total, and an impression can sell between your agent finding it and your paying for it, so agents check its availability again immediately before offering it to you.

A seller can grow or shrink a run later; an impression already sold stays exactly as it sold.
